Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane. Glycolic acid 20 to 70% is applied to the surface of the skin for mild exfoliation of dead cells that form on the epidermis. This treatment can be performed on all skin types. It is the mildest treatment with no to minimal recovery time depending on the percentage of acid used.

This 20 minutes procedure will brighten dull looking skin immediately. It will also activate cell renewal which helps with collagen reproduction. It gives the skin an immediate fresh glow. When done on a regular basis they may help light some pigment spots and slightly tighten pores. Glycolic acid peels are also frequently used to treat acne in conjunction with other therapies.

Side effects from glycolic acid peels are rare and mild. Most individuals are able to return to work or regular activities immediately after the treatment. These peels are performed by our expert nurse/estitician but are always done with the back up of a Board Certified Dermatologist.

After a glycolic peel the skin may be slightly red for up to 24 hours. Sensitivity to sunlight may occur and a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be used for several days after. Dry, flaky skin may occur and last 4 to 5 days.

Patients should stop any prescription treatment creams such as Vitamin A acid or topical acne antibiotics 3 days before their peel. These products can be resumed 3 days after the glycolic peel.

It is recommended that a maintenance treatment of glycolic acid moisturizer such as Reversa 8% cream or lotion (available at our office) of Vitamin A acid be used after the peel to further enhance the results of the glycolic peel.

Finally, other cosmetic treatments such as Botox and Restylane/Perlane may be done immediately after a glycolic peel. Facials or waxing should be avoided for least 5 days after a glycolic peel to avoid irritation.

Bay Dermatology Centre offers a full range of cosmetic procedures. Referral from another doctor is not necessary to see a dermatologist at the centre for more information on one of our services.
